Sea Duck Hunt in Wisconsin …???
Wisconsin takes stab at sea duck hunt

Dean Bortz, editor of Wisconsin Outdoor News, writes:

Madison – If Wisconsin duck hunters are ever going to have a sea duck season on the Great Lakes, it’s going to take the cooperation of other Great Lakes states.

Not to mention plenty of cajoling at the federal level – and lots and lots of time.

Kent Van Horn, DNR waterfowl ecologist, will be able to better gauge just what state duck hunters might be up against after a Mississippi Flyway Council meeting with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service the third week of February.

Between now and then, Van Horn is going to continue talking with his counterparts in Great Lakes states like Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and New York to see if he can gather some steam for a push at the USFWS for some federal support to create a Great Lakes sea duck season.

“This is going to take a little while,” Van Horn said. “The USFWS already has concerns over the population status of sea ducks, and they’re considering backing off of sea duck season on the Atlantic Coast, so we’re not in the best environment to go in and ask for more.”
