Background: Wisconsin’s statewide 2010 fall turkey season runs from Sept. 18 through Nov. 18. In five of the state’s seven turkey zones, there is an extended season that runs from Nov. 29 through Dec. 31. This is an experimental extension that will end this year.

The extended fall season may appear as a permanent rule offering on the spring 2011 fish & game hearings questionnaire.

Gulf Oil Spill – lower duck bag limits ?

Background: A front-page story in the June 25 issue of Wisconsin Outdoor News by writer Tim Eisele warns that the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico could have a long-lasting impact on waterfowl that will migrate this fall from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast:

“The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is having a major effect on local wildlife and on the people who fish and make a living on those waters.

Wisconsin sportsmen may not feel directly impacted now, but when ducks, geese, and shorebirds begin migrating south this fall, they could well face the same oil-coated waters.”

Eisele quotes Wisconsin DNR and USFWS officials as saying as of now there is no plan to lower waterfowl bag limits or reduce the length of the season iin response to the spill.

Would you support a statutory change that would allow hunters 55 years of age or older to use a crossbow for hunting without the need to obtain medical proof of a disability?

Crossbow use by age …?

Background:

This was Conservation Congress Advisory Question 86 in this year’s spring hearings questionnaire. This question received 2,014 votes for and 1,767 against.

Currently, the law allows senior hunters age 65 and older to use a crossbow for hunting without the need of a special crossbow permit or disabled permit.

However, hunters age 55 and older, due to issues such as arthritis, bursitis, injuries and other ailments may choose to give up bowhunting rather than go through the effort of getting the medical exam necessary to obtain a special permit.

Propoents of the change feel that allowing crossbows to be used by those 55 years of age and older would increase the number of hunters in this age group who would choose to continue to archery hunt.

Those opposed to this proposal see lowering the age as detrimental to the sport of archery by increasing the number of these advanced weapons in use during the archery season.
