Should coyote season remain closed north of Highway 64 during the firearms deer season?
During the Spring Conservation Congress portion of the Spring Fish & Game Hearings in April, attendees answered 5870 yes and 582 no to Advisory Question 71, which asked if coyote season should be open statewide year-round.
Currently, coyote season is closed north of Highway 64 during the firearms deer season to keep hunters from accidentally shooting wolves. Wolves now exist south of Highway 64, proponents of a year-round open season on coyotes argue, so there’s no reason to stop hunters from shooting coyotes in one part of the state during deer season when they can legally shoot them in another.
Some opponents of a year-round statewide open season (which was the case until recently, when wolf numbers increased and deer hunters were shooting wolves mistaking them for coyotes) say that an open season on coyotes would give hunters who don’t like wolves an excuse to shoot them “accidentally” while deer hunting.
What do you think? We’ll let you know the results in next weeks newsletter. |

No i don’t think it should, but maybe the fine for shooting a wolf should increase to offset the chance of someone shooting a wolf accidentally.
I think the coyote season should remain open. Hunters should be able to recognize their game. If not, they shouldn’t shoot.
Besides, If someone really wants to “accidentally” shoot a wolf (or any other protected animal), I don’t think they will wait for deer gun season. A criminal has no ethics.
No I don’t believe we should close the coyote season during deer season. We don’t close deer season because the elk may be mistaken for deer. We don’t close the grouse season because there are spruce grouse in the ares. Poor reasoning and logic. The coyote population is out of control in my hunting areas.
Hello Dan The coyote season should not be closed. Many hunters would not go just coyote hunting and when they are deer hunting they can have a chance at a bonus coyote and to help with the population problem. I am a coyote hunter and would be disapointed if a coyote ran past my stand and was not able to shoot.
