I feel if the parents are deemed reliable say they also have to pass hunters safety with the child ,then yes lower it.If not, I think the learn to hunt program is more than sufficient for 10 year olds!
Yes. Parents still need to decide if their child is ready to hunt no matter what the legal hunting age is. Some children may not be ready at the current age. If a parent decides that they are ready at age 10, why should they have to travel out of state to take them hunting.
Yes. While many kids from the city may not be ready to hunt at an early age, some from more rural areas are much more responsible and mature. It should be up to the parents to decide if their child is ready. The parent would have to be at the child’s side as well.
The word “hunting” may bring thoughts of “deer hunting”. A high-power rifle may be too much for a 10 year old. However, a smaller child could certainly handle a .22 for squirrel hunting or a 20-guage for other small game.. I believe in the “no child left indoors” theory. Get them outside to enjoy nature.
I support the legislation to lower the hunting age to 10. Although it is too late for my sons (17 and 14) we did lobby and support Sen Decker’s bill to lower the hunting age several years ago. If a youth is interested and takes the appropriate hunter training courses (and passes) I feel they should be allowed to carry a firearm and hunt with direct parent/guardian supervision.
I beleive that lowering the age to 10 would be advantageous. With a proer hunters course and parnt supervision, a 10 year old can be an efficient and responsible hunter.
