Rule changes will be examined at DNR meetings

In the Jan. 19 edition of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, outdoors editor Paul Smith wrote:

Should Wisconsin allow rifles for deer hunting statewide? Allow the overnight – even season-long – placement of tree stands on state property? Allow motor trolling on waters statewide? Allow largemouth bass to be harvested from northern Wisconsin lakes in May and June?

The Department of Natural Resources has recommended these and other potential rule changes for inclusion on the 2013 spring hearings questionnaire.

I believe rifles are just as safe as shotguns by Wisconsin hunters.

Just know your target and beyond! Using any weapon, if you are not 100% sure you have a safe shot, DO NOT TAKE THE SHOT!!

There are populate areas that can only use shot guns and that is the way it should stand, each area set their rules.

Wisconsin has too many urbanized areas that people hunt the outskirts of. Rifle bullets travel too far and could go into areas of homes. Keep the rifles denser wooded areas.

I would favor a statewide video exam with hunters proving their ability to recognize and shoot safely at their targets. The technology is there!

Yes! I currently use a TC contender 30-06 for deer hunting. There really should not be a big difference between using this handgun and a rifle. I also think using a rifle would harvest deer more cleanly than a shotgun with a slug.

They have proven rifles in hunting situations are just as safe as shotguns and your rifle bullet when fired at sane angle as shotgun slug will not travel farther.

The shotgun only provision was made before hunter safety requirements. Rifles are an efficent tool that should be utilized.
