Statement from DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp on Judge Peter Anderson’s ruling on the use of dogs for wolf hunting

We are pleased that Judge Anderson removed the injunction that banned the use of dogs for hunting wolves. However, we are disappointed with Judge Anderson’s decision to prohibit training of dogs to hunt wolves.

We will continue to seek input from the public and from stakeholders – including tribes – as we continue to develop permanent rules on the wolf season, and the use of dogs for both training and hunting of wolves.

It seems foolish to send any old untrained dog into a wilderness situation. The bombastic nature of an untrained dog would surely ruin any chance to succeed. Especially when you consider the intelligence of the wolf. The law basically is a ruse then, made to look like they are pro hunting. However in reality they prevent the success by limiting the hunter to the point of not doing it. If the idea is to purposefully command a control on any wildlife poulation, it would mean a policy that promotes the hunters’ (population control technician) ability to do the job successfully. To send untrained dogs into a wolf hunt would be dangerous to the dogs as well.

The judge apparently has not been educated in how fair chase with hounds works. His ruling is like saying you can use a labrador to hunt ducks but you can’t train it to retrieve.

I am not against hunting wolves but I do not think dogs should enter the picture. They will have their paws full if they come upon a pack.
