Madison – Muskie research shows that Wisconsin could increase its general statewide size limit from 34 to 40 inches if there is support for that move from sportsmen and fish managers within the DNR.

“Muskie nut” isn’t a title found in the DNR’s personnel listings, but it could apply to Tim Simonson, a DNR fish biologist who has worked on muskie management and research over the years. It’s been one of Simonson’s jobs to track research findings on the state’s 40-inch muskie size limits.   “With a bigger-size limit, fish will be around longer,” he said. “There are three basic reasons, or three objectives, for a higher size limit. We’re not meeting the full potential of muskies with a 34- inch size limit.

They are capable of reaching 40 inches even in 50-acre lakes. We would also be protecting females to full maturity. We looked at fyke net data; 40.8 inches is full maturity for 95 percent of females. Some mature earlier, but most female muskies mature at 40.8 inches. Read on…

doesn’t need to be. most guys release them. And for the occasional fish that is kept for mounting, isn’t going to hurt the popultaion. I don’t buy that more are kept than people admit to. Where does it stop to be a legal fish if the size limit keeps getting jacked up?

  2. Jim O'Hagan says:

The goal should be to get everyone to catch and release musky. You should encourage kids to catch a musky, show it off, then release it. You should encourage everyone else to catch a musky, photograph it, then release it. Increasing the minimum size will tempt people to keep a smaller musky so they can show it off, increasing the risk it will die before it can be released, and teaching them that poaching can be done occasionally without getting caught. For musky, set the size so you need a 3 to 5 year old fish to be legal, but no larger.
If you need to reduce the number of muskies taken, why not limit it to one per month?

  3. Mike Fischer says:

Yes. Give these fish a chance to reproduce. I think we shaould raise the size limit on northerns also. Lakes in the southern part of the state are full of small panfish. This could help control the large populations and give them a chance to reproduce

  4. I have to side with the expert. Anyone devoted to studying one species of fish in that depth would have his data in spades before he made his recommendation. Raise the size limit and educate, educate, educate, on proper release methods.

  5. Jon Rossmiller says:

Please don’t raise the size limit. Let people keep one or two each season. That would promote catch and release until you caught one you really wanted to keep! And if lightning struck twice in that one season, you could keep the 2nd one too……I’m still waiting to keep my first musky and it will have to top 50!
